  • Freestyle (front crawl)

This is the most "normal" swimming style, which the majority of people associate with swimming. Freestyle is the fastest of the four strokes. It is characterized by lying on the stomach, arms moving alongside the body, while the legs kick up and down. Ideally, the head is also down in the water to minimize water resistance.

Breaststroke This style is probably the one that the majority of people can actually swim. Besides being the slowest style, it is also likely the easiest style from a technical standpoint—at least if the goal is simply to move forward. Breaststroke is swum by first making a swirp-like motion with the arms in front of the head, followed by bending the legs upward and then kicking outward and inward to create propulsion. The characteristic of this style is that, in breaststroke, it is the legs that propel you forward the most, whereas in the other styles, it is the arms.

  • Backstroke

In backstroke, you lie on your back and look up towards the sky/ceiling while swimming. Backstroke is, therefore, the slightly "risky" style if one is not careful. Suddenly, you might hit the wall, or find yourself on the other side of the lane. In backstroke, the arms move in a circular motion around the body, pulling the water backward underwater, while the legs kick up and down.

  • (Medley - IM)

This "style" (it's not a real style) is very special compared to the others. It is a combination of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle, in that order. You swim all four styles in the medley.

Now that you know the 4 (5) styles, it's time to get started and try them out! It can be quite challenging :-)
